How did you get into your particular industry?
I was frustrated with my mom and the way she was willing to give up on life at just the tender age of 50. I knew I needed to step in and help her by offering solutions and hope.
She was compromised with a stressful life that seemed to get in the way of her nutrition and the whole 360 approach to healthy living/lifestyle. I wanted to offer her solutions and help her see that she could live a healthy and vibrant life.
How did you come to open up your business in Montclair?
This is where I migrated to from the beautiful twin islands Trinidad and Tobago. I felt at home! And I felt accepted and safe when I got my first job here. It’s an amazing community; I built so many amazing relationships. It’s now my new home.
How do you define wellness?
It is health which is real wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver. – Mahatma Gandhi
Health is your true wealth. I believe we only have one shot at this life; one body, one mind – we’ve got to give it everything we’ve got. There’s no rewind, playback or do-overs. Just the power of now, right now!
Why is a sense of community so important to running a local business?
I am totally invested in my community. I care about the people at large and its future. I believe a healthy community is everything.
Local business and community go hand-in-hand. By contributing to availability and accessibility of services and offerings, it improves the quality of life for the entire community. It also fosters working relationships and networking with other local business owners, which helps to strengthen the community. Stronger sense of community drives loyalty and support for local business among residents.
There are some pretty alarming stats related to health care spending in the U.S., and it’s not slowing down. Real change happens at a local level, in community where there is relationship. My goal is to make an impact in the health and wellness space in my own community first.
What’s one piece of health advice you recommend to everyone?
Move, move, move! You don’t have to have a gym membership – simply move.
How do you unwind and relax after a long day?
Oh, so many things I truly enjoy doing to relax – catching up with a friend on the phone, taking baths, listening to music, stretching, deep breathing, taking relaxing strolls in my neighborhood, sitting in my backyard… so many things, the list is endless!
