Color Can be Magic

March 8, 2019 by House of Funk Leave a Comment

Color can be magic.

While I devour images of chic white and richly layered neutral interiors, the truth is, my portfolio is just filled with color.

Vibrant, fun, and energizing—does color make your world go round? It’s like magic to wake up a space.

This home featured an accent color of tangerine. I love when clients are open to playing with pops of bright color in a space. Here, the orange brings a feeling of warmth and vitality to the room. These gorgeous side chairs from Vanguard are unexpected and cool, sinuous in shape, and very comfortable. The orange hue continues in the banquette pillows and on the roman shades by Window Works. This cozy nook, which features a table by The Old Wood Co., is the perfect place to start the day with a fresh cup of coffee and the paper.

Different home, similar color scheme. The hues in this space are richer and deeper. The banquette is so inviting, while the colorful throw pillows and candles liven things up. Dark, dark green on  the window trim—super subtle, but a stunning way to frame that view!

My NYC client wanted to create a sophisticated, yet youthful sitting room for their tween daughter. I offset calm, neutral tones with deep, pinky-red accents. A Layla Grayce throw pillow feels exotic while the deep ruby desk chair is refined and timeless.

Before our redesign, this sunroom was a visually busy space directly off of the family room, with heavy, faux tile covering all but the ceiling. Boring blinds and the faux stone walls took away from the amazing view and made the space feel very closed in.

Prior to making any changes I spoke with the clients, and a huge part of what we talked about was “Why would you ever come into this room?”  “What’s going to bring you here?” and then, “How do you want to feel when you’re here?” So we talked a ton about coming here and being able to relax while keeping the space feeling very open and airy, and connecting it with the outdoors.

We created a cozy and functional reading space. The two shapely chairs from Bernhardt are specifically made for lounging. I accented them with custom pillows in a vibrant, embroidered fabric. A custom ottoman sits between the wing chair—wonderful for sharing. This furniture grouping has Sunday morning written all over it.

We had layers and layers of neutrals, grays, and charcoals, and I wanted to bring in a big punch. The area rug was the perfect addition to do that. It’s a great jute and natural wool with this amazing pop of orange.

The art from Barloga Studios create a dramatic, yet calm, moment on the back wall.

This project included a complete gut renovation of the master suite, which consisted of a large master bedroom, master bathroom, and a hallway. Now the homeowners have a smaller bedroom, a large bathroom, and a beautiful walk-through closet.

A plush, Lee Industries armchair is ideal for settling in at the end of a long day, and a small table, also by Lee Industries, is there to hold a drink, book, or, let’s be honest, device. A Vanguard ottoman can easily be moved as needed. The carpeting is neutral and a great backdrop for pops of color courtesy of accent pieces like a bright throw and lumbar pillow. How invigorating is that pop of yellow in this soothing space?
