Selecting an original piece of art that speaks to you is key, but there’s one tip that will allow your art to be more enjoyable. Ever wonder: do I have the right wall art height? It’s one of the most common mistakes of decorating.
Hang art at the height for how you use the space it’s going into. If you are in a foyer, where most people stand, hang it at standing eye-level. But for sitting rooms, art should be positioned at a level that is comfortably seen from a sofa or chair.
A good rule of thumb is 6″ – 12″ above the back of the sofa (unless it’s a super low back, you may need to go to 18″). You want the art to feel connected to the item it is hanging above. If there is too much space between the mantle or back of the sofa and the art, it feels like a void that needs to be filled. We want to notice the beautiful art, not the odd placement.
Hope you have an art filled day. Happy lowering. Leave a comment below if this helped, or made you want to re-hang all of your art.

Yes, good point on considering your vantage point of seeing art. In rooms where we mostly lounge around, I prefer art to be lower than what you might expect in a pass thru room like a foyer.

Thanks for the tip! I always struggle when it comes to the precise placement. I think I know what looks best but always second guess myself so this helps a bunch 🙂

I learned this from you years ago and it has made a WORLD of difference. That whole idea of things being visually grouped (e.g. a couch and the painting above it) is just one of those things everyone should have in their back pocket.
The one problem with knowing this: When I see a piece of art floating way too high on someone’s wall, it kind of hurts my brain. So I’ll be sharing this post for the public good.
